How UNO helped us spend more time together and less time on our phones

I used to think hanging out with friends in our student apartment would naturally mean spending time together. We live near campus, we see each other often, and we always say we want to catch up. But in reality, most of our hangouts looked the same: we sat in the kitchen, talked for a few minutes, and then everyone slowly started looking at their phones.

At first, I did not think it was a serious problem. Everyone was just checking messages, scrolling through TikTok, or replying to something on Instagram. But after a while, I realized that even though we were all in the same room, we were not really spending time together. We were just sharing space.

That was the part I did not like. I wanted quality time with friends, not just another evening where everyone sat together but did their own thing. I wanted us to laugh more, talk more, and actually enjoy being together instead of ending up in silence with five phones on the table.

The problem with our usual hangouts

The main problem was not that we did not want to have fun. We did. The problem was that we never had an easy idea for what to do. When you are tired after classes, work, or studying, you do not always want to organize something complicated. You want something simple, fast, and fun.

That is why our hangouts often turned into the same routine:

  • someone suggested “just chill”
  • someone else opened their phone “for a second”
  • another person started scrolling too
  • and suddenly the whole group was quiet

It became normal, but it was not really what I wanted from my friendships. I started to notice that a lot of students probably have the same problem. We want group activities for students without phones, but most of the time we do not know what to do instead.

How we found UNO

One day, we were looking for something fun to do at home, and someone suggested UNO. At first, it sounded like a very simple idea, almost too simple. But that was actually the reason it worked so well.

UNO did not need a long explanation. We did not need to prepare anything. We did not need special materials or a long planning session. We just opened the deck and started playing.

That made everything easier. Instead of spending ten minutes deciding what to do, we started having fun right away. And that changed the whole mood of the night.

Why UNO worked for us

What I liked most about UNO is that it is one of those screen free games that actually brings people together. You are not just sitting next to each other. You are reacting, laughing, competing, and talking the whole time.

It also worked because everyone could understand it quickly. Some of my friends do not like games with too many rules, and honestly, neither do I. UNO is different because you can learn it in a couple of minutes and still have a really fun time.

Another thing I noticed is that UNO fits student life perfectly. It is:

  • cheap.
  • easy to carry.
  • fast to start.
  • fun for small groups.
  • perfect for spontaneous plans.

That is exactly the kind of game students need. We do not always have a lot of time, energy, or money, so having something simple that always works is really useful.

What changed after we started playing

After that first night, UNO became one of our favorite things to do when we were together. Instead of checking our phones every few minutes, we stayed focused on the game. Instead of awkward silence, there was laughter. Instead of everyone doing their own thing, we were actually sharing the same moment.

I think that was the biggest change: the hangouts started feeling real again.

We were not trying to “be productive” or do something impressive. We were just enjoying each other’s company. And sometimes that is exactly what you need.

UNO also helped us make small memories that ended up being the best part of the night. Someone always got too competitive. Someone always complained about a +4 card. Someone always celebrated too early and then lost. Those little moments made the hangout memorable.

Why I would recommend it

If you are a student and you feel like your hangouts are starting to feel repetitive, I would honestly recommend trying UNO. It is not complicated, it does not take much effort, and it gives you a reason to put your phone away for a while.

For me, it solved a problem I did not even know how to explain properly. I wanted better time with my friends, but I did not want something that felt forced or boring. UNO was the perfect middle ground. It was simple, fun, and exactly what we needed.

Sometimes the best activities are not the big or expensive ones. Sometimes it is just a card game that gives you a reason to laugh together.

Final thought

If you are also looking for quality time with friends and want to stop falling into the same phone-scrolling routine, UNO is a really good place to start. It made our hangouts feel more fun, more social, and a lot more personal.

For me, that is what made the difference.
